Emergency contacts

Emergency services

For all emergency services (Fire, Ambulance and Police) call 999.

If you are deaf or hard of hearing, text mobile telephone number 07786 200 815.

Police non-emergency issues

If your call is less urgent than 999, you can call 08456 043 043 for advice, information and action on community safety and anti-social behaviour issues. This frees up the 999 service to handle police emergencies.

Neighbourhood Helpline

If you have an issue regarding Council services, you can call the Neighbourhood Helpline on 0300 1000 101. Newcastle and Sunderland City Councils have joined together to provide this 24 hour, 7 day a week Neighbourhood Helpline. You can call to report a series of issues like noise nuisance, rubbish and litter or abandoned vehicles, and a trained adviser will log all of the information and will report it to the relevant team to sort it out.

Utility services

Electricity - To report a loss of supply, or if you are concerned about the safety of electrical equipment, call NEDL on telephone number 0800 668 877 (24 hour service)

Gas - If you smell gas or are worried about gas safety, call Transco on telephone number 0800 111 999 (24 hour service)

Water - To report a water leak, call Northumbria Water on telephone number
0800 393 084 (24 hour service)

To report a flood, call telephone number 0800 328 7648 (24 hour service).

Calls to the above 0800 telephone numbers will not cost you anything, and you will be put through to operators who are trained to deal with your problem.

Health services

If you need medical advice, call NHS Direct on telephone number 0845 46 47 (24 hour service).

Social Services

If you need urgent help with social care during the evening or weekend, call telephone number 0191 232 8520 (24 hour service) and ask for the Emergency Duty Team.

Council house repairs

If you live in a Council house and need an emergency repair to your home, contact the Repairs Centre on telephone number 0845 113 8888 (24 hour service, but for emergency repairs only after 6pm).

Please note, if you call after 6pm it is a good idea to check that what you need doing is classed as an emergency by the Repairs Centre. If it is not, you may be charged for the call-out. The person who answers your call will be able to advise you about this.

Environmental issues

To report pollution, damage, or danger to the natural environment and wildlife, call the Environment Agency on telephone number 0800 80 70 60.
