The Elders Council of Newcastle is a charity that provides a voice for older people on issues concerning their quality of life, health and well-being. They want society to realise the potential of older people as a creative and active resource for the community.
They are run by older people for older people. They work through eight working groups: Transport; Housing; Community Safety; Learning and Culture; Older Person Friendly City; Health and Social Care (which runs the drama group Old Spice); Readers (which broadcasts a monthly radio programme); and Outreach.
If you are aged over 50 years old and living or active in Newcastle, you can join the Elders Council. Membership is free and is for life. You could also join one of their working groups. The Denton Mature Action Group (MAG) has been developed with older people and has been set up to make sure that older people have opportunities to contribute and influence the decisions that are made about their lives.
The Group takes an active role in tackling issues that have been identified as important to older people in Denton. This includes improving the flow of information in the Denton ward, offering more health and fitness opportunities to support active ageing, lobbying for improved transport, and making sure that Denton is an older person friendly environment.
