Keeping active
A three year Active Ageing programme is hosted by the Quality of Life Partnership. Funded by the Big Lottery’s New Leaf New Life Public Health Consortium, this aims to increase the mental wellbeing of and the level of participation in physical activity of people aged 50+ in Newcastle.
City Centre Health Walks
Working in partnership with Ground Work South Tyneside and Newcastle, these hour long health walks are perfect for beginners and/or people wanting a brisk stroll with an opportunity to socialise with others.
Following six main routes:
- Leazes Park
- Exhibition Park
- The Quayside
- The Riverside
- Ouseburn
- The Castle Keep
All sessions are led by qualified walk leaders.
Each walk costs £1 and starts at 1pm every Thursday from Grey's Monument. No booking is required, just turn up at the meeting point.
For further information about City Centre Health Walks, please contact Michelle Mordue, Active Ageing Development Worker on (0191) 255 1985.
Nordic walking programme
Ever seen people walking around with what looks like two skis? Well, this is called Nordic Walking and it was developed by cross-country skiers as a method of training in the summer months.
Using the poles to propel your body forward, you will find this activity is very stable, even on uneven ground, uses more muscles and burns 46% more calories than normal walking. And it’s a fun way of combining fresh air, physical activity and meeting new people!
Fancy a try?
Working in partnership with HealthWorks we run several four-week introductory programmes from Exhibition Park throughout the year. The course costs £12 per person which contributes towards the cost of our Specialist Instructors and the provision of all of the equipment.
As places are limited to 10 people per programme, we suggest you reserve your place now! Our next course will be held during February/March 2010. Pre-booking is required.
For further information about Nordic Walking, or to book a place, please contact Michelle Mordue, Active Ageing Development Worker on (0191) 255 1985.
For information about other walking groups in the City, please see our section on Fitness.
Social Cycling Programme
Due to the overwhelming popularity of the recent 'On Yer Bike' programme, we have now launched a weekly social group to meet the demand for year-round cycling opportunities.
Running from Spillers Quay, Newcastle Quayside (next to the Ouseburn Regeneration Centre), the sessions run every Friday from 10.30 am until noon. The sessions are split into two groups:
- Those who want to refresh their skills and ride at a more leisurely pace; and
- Those who are laready confident cyclists and want to ride more progressively difficult routes
Afterwards, both groups come together to have a cuppa and share notes. Each session costs £3 (which pays for bike hire, safety equipment (helmet and gloves), and contributes towards the cost of our fully qualified cycling instructors).
The big difference is that you now simply pay as you go with no need to book in advance. You merely turn up and pay for the sessions you attend!
For further information about Social Cycling, please contact Michelle Mordue, Active Ageing Development Worker on (0191) 255 1985.
Prime Time - Water Confidence Course
Are you nervous in the water? Have never learnt to swim?
If you answered yes to one or both of these questions, then these new weekly sessions have been organised with you in mind!
Working in partnership with Elswick Pool, we have designed a brand new water based course to provide a safe and supportive environment for you to venture into the water.
Sessions will incorporate the use of flotation aids and a variety of water based activities to increase both water mobility and confidence. As an extra benefit we can even guarantee a constant pool temperature of 30% so you never have to worry about the water being cold!!
As if this wasn’t enough to tempt you, you don’t even need to own a bathing suit to join in!! You can wear a t-shirt, shorts or leggings instead!!
Sessions will be held every Tuesday morning, 10am until noon at a cost of £2 (which also provides FREE ENTRY into the sauna and steam rooms.)
