Travelling to the shops

As you get older it can get harder to get out and about, especially to do things like your food shopping when you have heavy bags to carry.

There is a community shopping scheme in Newcastle that could help you called 'Hop to the Shops'.

This scheme has been developed by Nexus, the Quality of Life Partnership, Community Transport (Newcastle) and Age UK Newcastle. It aims to provide a service for older people living in Newcastle to do essential food shopping, who would otherwise struggle because they have difficulty using public transport. This could either be through disability, or because they live somewhere that isn't convenient for public transport routes.

This scheme is providing a fortnightly minibus service for older people to do their shopping at a supermarket. There are currently pick-up points from various sheltered housing schemes around Newcastle. In addition to picking up people from the sheltered housing schemes, the minibuses also pick up people in the local area from their own homes.

Each journey costs £1.50; so if you are using the minibus to go to the supermarket and back again, it will cost you £3. If you need a carer to accompany you on the trip, they travel for free.

If you would like to find out more, or would like to book a place, contact Community Transport using the details below, between 9am and 3.30pm. If there is no answer, leave a message on the answer machine and they will get back to you.
