There are now many ways that you can get health information or treatment outside of normal working hours, or without an appointment. You can read about some of these in the sections below.

Walk-in centres

Walk-in centres are for patients who want fast and convenient access to healthcare advice, information and treatment for minor illnesses and injuries.

Minor Injuries Units

Minor Injuries Units are for patients with injuries such as sprains, cuts and grazes. The waiting times are generally much shorter than at Accident and Emergency, where staff have to give priority to serious and life-threatening conditions.

Accident and Emergency (A & E)

Accident and Emergency departments provide a 24-hour service for patients requiring emergency medical attention.

Ophthalmic Accident and Emergency

Opththalmic Accident and Emergency departments provide care for patients who have any eye conditions that can't be treated by a GP or at a Minor Injuries Unit. Patients are treated by doctors, nurse specialists and optometrists. Priority is given to patients with sight-threatening conditions.
