What is a Holocaust witness? Changing attitudes to witnessing and bearing witness 1945-2024 with Professor Ian Biddle (Newcastle University)

Many scholars have observed that, over time, attitudes to witnessing, testimony and the eye witness have changed. This lecture draws on a range of Holocaust testimonies and a range of reactions to those testimonies to draw a picture of the changing role of the witness in our understanding of the Holocaust. We will explore different kinds of testimony (written, sung, recorded, filmed and so on), and different uses made of these testimonies. What, this lecture asks, are the underlying causes of these changes? How can we make sense of such changes without undermining the centrality of testimony to the study of any mass violence?

Booking is required but tickets are free.
