Reading with dementia

Reading with Dementia is a project creating books, publications and dementia friendly resources for people living with dementia. They also run free, creative workshops in Newcastle.

Reading with Dementia creative workshops for people with lived experience of dementia run at venues across the city. These workshops with professional artists explore archive collections, such as posters and play bills at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal, to develop dementia-friendly resources.

Reading with Dementia through Equal Arts also publishes Open Ended Books: Books inspired by museum and archive collections and developed with and for people living with dementia and health care professionals.

The books have:

  • A story on every two-page spread
  • An easy to follow narrative, rich with intriguing details that provoke curiosity and imagination
  • A design and content that prompts conversations and an enjoyable shared reading experience for people living with dementia and their family and friends.
