Motability: financial assistance for disabled drivers

Motability is an independent, not-for-profit organisation which provides mobility solutions for disabled people. This includes help to lease or buy a car, or to buy a powered wheelchair or scooter.

To be eligible for a Motability scheme you must be in receipt of one of the following benefits:

The benefit must have at least 12 months award length remaining when you apply.

No waiting lists, credit checks or medical assessments are needed. Even if you don't drive, you can apply for a car as a passenger and propose two other suitable people as drivers. Parents and carers can also make an application on behalf of a child aged three years old or older.

The Motability Car Scheme allows you to exchange your mobility allowance for a reliable, brand new car every three years. This includes the insurance, servicing, tyres, and road tax. You can choose from over 3,000 models and can order it at your local car dealership. By paying a small sum upfront (known as an advance payment) you can increase the choice that's available to you.

The Motability Powered Wheelchair and Scooter Scheme gives you a choice from a wide range of powered wheelchairs and scooters, many of which don't require an advance payment or your full allowance to be used. This includes a free no-obligation home demonstration, comprehensive insurance, servicing, and warranty.

For further information about buying a car or powered wheelchair or scooter, contact Motability using the details given below, or visit their website.
