Getting the voice and views of older people heard in Newcastle
The Elders Council is the older people’s forum in Newcastle. It is a voluntary organisation run by and for older people in Newcastle. They work to get the voice and views of older people heard in our city.
What do the Elders Council of Newcastle do?
The Elders Council has an active membership. They gather the views of older people in Newcastle to make sure that the views of the over 50s are taken into account by decision-makers in Newcastle. They influence policy and organise events and projects that raise issues affecting older people.
The Elders Council is a partner in Newcastle’s Age Friendly City initiative where we are working with key organisations in the city such as Newcastle City Council, University of Newcastle, University of Northumbria, the Clinical Commissioning Groups and Age UK Newcastle on making Newcastle a good place in which to grow old.
They share information with members of the Elders Council through:
- a bi monthly newsletter
- a monthly radio show on Nova Radio North East
- their Annual General Meeting
- outreach sessions in the community

How can I join?
It is free to join the Elders Council if you live in Newcastle
As a member you will receive the regular newsletter either via post or email. You will then also have the opportunity to get involved in projects, seminars, focus groups and events that the Elders Council organise.
If you are interested in participating in projects and having your say about services and issues in Newcastle please contact the Elders Council or check on their website to find out about their current work programme.

Get involved in your community
How to get involved in research, share your experiences to improve services or speak up for your your community This may be called activism, involvement, engagement, co-production or collaboration. These organisations involve older people in campaigns, research and more.
Platform 60 is a website and online community forum for older people across the UK. Members are older campaigners, volunteers, community activists and others from a range of different organisations. Platform 60 allows people working or campaigning for Older people to share ideas, good practice and get feedback from people with similar experiences or goals. Platform 60 is developed and run by older people for older people.
VOICE involves older people in research. Members work with academics to improve the focus, quality, relevance and impact of research, to make a positive difference to people’s lives. Members can take part in lifelong learning and become research active citizens. While helping to shape social and technological innovation.

Have your say on health and care services
You can help to improve our health services. You can volunteer to take part in groups or forums to make sure the views of patients, carers and the public are heard. Your feedback is used to improve health services in the North East of England.
