With four phases in total, there are three phases offering £1,000 donations, if they don’t win the first, they’ll be entered into the second and the third. Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment – give  your views

The pharmaceutical needs assessment (PNA) is a statutory product produced by the public health team on behalf of the Newcastle’s Health and Wellbeing Board, City Futures. The document describes the health needs of the population, where community pharmacies are located, how services are currently delivered and what the current and potential need for pharmacy services will be in Newcastle. It identifies where there are gaps, if any, in pharmaceutical services.

A draft PNA is being shared with the public and key stakeholders in a 60-day consultation from 13th July to 12 September 2022. After closure of the consultation, feedback will be taken into account and a final version of the PNA will be produced. Take part using Let’s Talk Newcastle

Plastic Free July – British Science Festival

This year the British Science Festival explored microplastic pollution and how to tackle it. In a blog we read that scientists have recently unveiled a new innovation of tiny robotic fish made of a material that absorbs microplastics in the water. They are just 13 millimetres long and can carry up to five kilograms, meaning if they were widely dispersed, they could go a long way to cleaning the seas of these manmade particles.

Women’s Health Strategy

Last week the government launched its much awaited Women’s Health Strategy for England.  It’s purpose is to end decades of inequality for women and girls.

Women live longer than men on average, but spend about a quarter of their lives in poor health, compared with a fifth for men. The 127-page strategy says that “historically, the health and care system has been designed by men, for men”.

There is also a health gap between women in deprived areas and those in wealthier parts of the country.

Almost 100,000 women took part in the consultation process and there is now a budget of £10 million for 10 years set aside.

Priority areas include:

  • menstrual health and gynaecological conditions
  • fertility pregnancy, pregnancy loss and postnatal support
  • menopause
  • mental health and wellbeing
  • impact of violence against women and girls
  • cancer
  • healthy ageing

Plans include:

  • compulsory women’s health training for all doctors/GPs with mandatory assessment
  • more cancer checks and “one-stop shop” hubs across the NHS
  • access to contraception, IVF, maternity support
  • baby-loss certificates will be offered to those losing a child before 24 weeks
  • a national fitness programme will encourage older women to build muscle strength and keep active

Did you know that our Women’s Health Minister is Maria Caulfield and  Dame Professor Lesley Regan is the newly appointed Women’s Health Ambassador?
