Care homes in Newcastle
You can pay to live in a residential care home when you can no longer live independently at home or you need nursing care. To work out how much you will pay for your care, the Council do a financial assessment. You will never pay more than the assessment says you can afford and you will never pay more than the actual cost of the services you use. There are some exceptions where the Council will pay
Some care homes specialise in one type of care and others offer different types. This may be useful if your care needs change and you may not have to move home in the future.
Care homes are run as businesses or by not-for-profit organisations. They are registered with and are inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Some care homes may also be commissioned by Newcastle City Council.
Skills for Care set the learning requirements for providers offering autism, learning disability, dementia, mental health and end of life care and support.
How to choose a care home
Choosing the right care home is important Thinking about what you want and need from a care home is a good place to start.

- Find a care home that offers the type of care that you need.

- Care Quality Commission regulate, check and inspect care home services. You can find their CQC ratings on their organisation listing and click on ‘see the report’ to read their inspection reports.
- You may also want to search for the home on the CareFind website or read independent reviews and opinions from review aggregator sites such as carehome.co.uk
- Contact the organisation and speak to their registered manager or main contact to find out more.
- Check if the home currently has any vacancies. If it doesn’t, find out how long the waiting list is.
- When you find a care home that seems suitable, visit the care home. You can ask to do this more than once.

Here’s the list of residential care homes to help you when choosing a care home. The following categories explain what care the care homes in Newcastle provide:
General care which includes personal care and support and help with:
- dressing
- eating, drinking and medication
- social activities
- mobility, such as getting in and out of bed
- night time support, including toileting
- supervision and support to keep you safe
- some general care homes also offer dementia care
Nursing care is given by qualified nurses. You may need nursing care if you:
- are very frail or have complex medical needs
- need higher levels of support with the things listed above
- have dementia and you’re unable to look after yourself, or behave in a way that puts you or others at risk
Specialist care for adults with complex medical needs, learning disabilities, dementia, mental health and brain injury.
